SERIES 2024

Women of Brazil

Brazilian women have made significant contributions to the world of cinema, carving out a space for themselves in an industry that has historically been dominated by men. Our Festival program highlights the bold, inspiring, and diverse work of female filmmakers in the twenty-first-century Brazilian film industry, including directors, screenwriters, and producers. This volume examines the diverse production and distribution spaces these filmmakers are working in, including documentary, experimental, and short filmmaking.

FILMS

Cinema is universaL beyond flags and borders and passports.

Brazil is the largest nation in Latin America; its box office revenue between 2020 and 2022 neared 154 million U.S. dollars. Brazil owns the silver medal in the region's film industry and has the ability to sustain its success in this industry over the next few years. The Brazilian entertainment and media market is projected to be valued at 35 billion U.S. dollars by 2024, a 25 percent increase from the value of 28 billion dollars in 2020, when COVID-19 broke out. By 2024, Brazil is projected to account for 13 percent of the total $2.5 trillion worldwide entertainment and media sector.

The growth of Brazilian film production is fueled by commissions from streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Globo Filmes.

THE STORIES DICTATE OUR reality.

The independent New York Brazilian Film Festival infuses the creative spirit and multi-ethnic culture of the Brazilian film industry. Our Festival will showcase work from a vast and influential Brazilian generation that is indelibly leaving its mark on the international film circuit. The NYBRFF highlights the impact of Brazilian diversity in films, exploring themes that are often subversive and challenge boundaries of class, gender, race, and politics. Brazilian cinema draws on the best of these influences to create narratives of the country’s rich and complex culture.
